Brief Description

Supervisor – Professor Bostjan Kobe

The successful candidate will be working under the direct supervision of Prof Bostjan Kobe as part of the project that aims to understand the mechanisms of action of proteins containing TIR (Toll/interleukin-1 receptor) domains. The successful candidate will be involved in using recombinant protein expression and purification, structural biology techniques such as X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy, enzymatic assays and protein interaction analysis approaches. During the course of the PhD, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to attend (inter)national conferences to present their research. The candidate will start the project in 2021.

A working knowledge of relevant techniques, such as molecular cloning, protein expression and purification, protein characterization and protein crystallization would be of benefit to someone working on this project.

Research environment

The School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences (SCMB) combines the disciplines of Chemistry, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Parasitology into a single academic unit. The common thread in our discipline mix is the capacity of molecular-based approaches to create understanding and underpin Discovery. The school has modern research laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment and research infrastructure. The school includes over 50 academic staff, who are widely published internationally and have extensive research backgrounds.

Eligible Course or Subjects: PhD degree programme in Structural biology of TIR Domain-Containing Proteins

Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following/given criteria:

You must need one of the following approved degrees to apply for a PhD:

  • have completed some research experience
  • have completed an approved university degree and
  • can meet the English language requirements.
  • Master of Philosophy (or another research master’s degree); or
  • Bachelor’s degree from an approved university with at least honours class IIA or equivalent; or
  • Coursework master’s degree with an overall grade point average of 5.65 on the 7-point UQ scale which includes relevant research experience, approved by the dean; or
  • Postgraduate degree (at least one year full-time or equivalent) with an overall grade point average of 5 on the 7-point UQ scale, together with demonstrated research experience equivalent to honours class IIA will be considered on a case-by-case basis; or
  • Bachelor’s degree plus at least 2 years of relevant research experience, including research publications.
